Panel Discussion on Trends in Optical and Radio Data Analysis

1985

Albrecht: What I want to do is to give a brief five-minute introduction to the subject, justifying the title which puts optical and radio astronomy in one and the same category, which I believe it is, as far as data analysis is concerned, and then I will ask the panel members to give us two-minute statements of their opinions on the subject and then I would like to ask the audience to fire questions at us.

DETERMINANTS OF PROFITABILITY IN SPANISH FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS. COMPARING AIDED AND NON-AIDED ENTITIES

2015

The last financial crisis has led to the greatest contribution of public funds ever made to Spanish banks. This paper studies why the need for support has been asymmetric, with not all of the institutions requiring aid. Based on profitability of assets (ROA), we determine using panel data econometric and logit response models the components of profit and loss accounts that generated profitability as well as the factors leading to some entities to ask for aid. The analyses show that before the beginning of the crisis there were significant differences between entities that needed aid and those that did not. The most profitable banks grounded their success in the traditional revenue component…

Putting time into space: the temporal coherence of spatial applications in the housing market

2016

International audience; Relationships between past events, future expectations and present decisions, typically examined through a temporal prism within applied economics, have been lately moving to the spatial dimension through spatial econometrics. However, violations of the “arrow of time”, and thus causality, have been identified in spatial econometric techniques applied to spatio-temporal data consisting of observations each at a specific location and distinct moment in time. A comprehensive review classifies for the first time several redresses to this issue in a currently fragmented literature. This paper puts back the temporal dimension into spatial Hedonic Pricing models through a …

Let’s Ask About Sex : Methodological Merits of the Sealed Envelope Technique in Face-to-Face Interviews

2020

When it comes to deviant behavior and other sensitive topics, respondents in surveys tend either to refuse answering such sensitive questions or to tailor their answers in a socially desirable direction. This occurs by underreporting on negatively connoted behaviors or attitudes and by overreporting on positively connoted ones (be it deliberately or undeliberate). Thus, prevalence estimates of deviant traits are biased. Moreover, if the tendency to misreport is related to influencing factors of the deviant behavior or attitude under investigation, the correlations are biased as well.

Detection of explanation obstacles in scientific texts: the effect of an understanding task vs. an experiment task

2013

The aim of this study is to analyse the effect of tasks on the detection of explanation obstacles when secondary school students read scientific texts. Students were instructed to read short passages under different task conditions, and to ask questions if necessary. Obstacle detection was operationalised in terms of the type of questions asked by the students. The experiment examined the influence of goals associated with the task of reading to understand a text vs. reading to perform a procedure described by the text (a science experiment). Significantly, more explanation obstacles were found in the understanding condition than in the experiment condition. Scientific text also had an effe…

Effects of Scientific Information Format on the Comprehension Self-Monitoring Processes: Question Generation // Efectos del formato en que se present…

2013

Generating questions is a regulatory action associated with self-monitoring processes in comprehension tasks: subjects can ask information seeking questions to solve comprehension obstacles. A sequence of two related experiments were conducted to trigger, classify and analyse questions asked under different conditions: reading a text about experimental scientific devices operating, watching these devices in a DVD and manipulating them in the LAB. Students’ information seeking questions were classified using a simple taxonomy. Taking into account the multimedia learning principles, the advantages of realistic animations for understanding time-depending processes and the effect of the procedu…

Risk Communication in Assisted Reproduction in Latvia: From Private Experience to Ethical Issues

2013

The aim of this paper is to analyze the process of risk communication in the context of assisted reproduction in Latvia. The paper is based on a qualitative methodology and two types of data: media analysis and 30 semi-structured interviews (11 patients, 4 egg donors, 15 experts). The study explores a broad definition of risk communication and explores three types of risks: health, psychosocial, and moral. We ask (1), who is involved in risk communication, (2), how risks are discussed using different channels of communication, and (3), what ethical problems arise during this process. In the process of analysis, we identified four types of information channels and two strategies of risk comm…

Price-Time Priority and Pro Rata Matching in an Order Book Model of Financial Markets

2011

Using our recently introduced order book model of financial markets we analyzed two different matching principles for order allocation — price-time priority and pro rata matching. Price-time priority uses the submission timestamp which prioritizes orders in the book with the same price. The order which was entered earliest at a given price limit gets executed first. Pro rata matching is used for products with low intraday volatility of best bid and best ask price. Pro rata matching ensures constant access for orders of all sizes. We demonstrate how a multiagent-based model of financial market can be used to study microscopic aspects of order books.
